Description
This Bitcoin Seed Phrase Backup Kit contains three fireproof hardened austenitic stainless-steel plates and an electric engraving pen for recording 12-word or 24-word recovery phrases offline. Each plate has 24 numbered word lines plus a notes line, allowing three redundant copies or one independent plate for each key in a three-key multisig wallet.
The engraving workflow requires no letter tiles, hammer, or punch set. Your recovery phrase never needs to touch a phone, camera, printer, cloud account, or internet-connected computer.

Why Back Up a Seed Phrase in Steel?
A recovery phrase can recreate the private keys to a compatible wallet. If every copy is lost, no manufacturer, exchange, or support team can reset it. If another person obtains it, that person may be able to spend the funds.
Paper is easy to write and verify but is vulnerable to fire, water, fading, and tearing. The included fireproof stainless-steel plates create durable offline records with no digital attack surface. Steel protects the record from environmental damage; secure placement and privacy protect it from people.
Three Plates: The Correct Ways to Use Them
| Use case | Recommended use |
|---|---|
| Single-signature wallet | Engrave identical verified copies and store them in separate secure locations. |
| 2-of-3 multisig wallet | Use one plate for each independent signer seed, then store every plate separately from its matching signing device. |
| Multiple wallets | Use one plate per wallet and label each with a non-sensitive identifier that does not expose ownership or balance. |
Do not divide one ordinary BIP39 phrase into informal thirds. That creates an undocumented recovery scheme and can make one missing plate fatal. Use a formally designed secret-sharing method only when the wallet and recovery procedure explicitly support it.
How to Engrave and Verify a Recovery Phrase
- Prepare privately: Work away from cameras, windows, microphones, and other people. Put phones and networked cameras outside the room.
- Confirm the source: Read the recovery phrase only from the offline wallet or existing physical backup. Never retrieve it from a screenshot or cloud file.
- Practice first: Test the engraving pen on scrap metal so the depth and writing speed are predictable.
- Install the bit: Keep the power switch off, hold the lock button, loosen the collet, insert the bit, and retighten the collet.
- Engrave in order: Record one complete word on each numbered line. Keep spelling and word order exact.
- Verify twice: Compare every engraved word and number with the offline source, then read the plate back in order.
- Test recovery: Restore the wallet on a compatible offline signer or use its official seed-verification function before relying on the plate.
- Store separately: Remove temporary notes and place each verified plate in its planned secure location.
Full Words or First Four Letters?
Every word in the English BIP39 list is uniquely identified by its first four letters. Engraving complete words can reduce ambiguity during a stressful recovery, provided the writing remains deep and legible. If using a different language or recovery standard, follow that wallet’s official backup rules rather than assuming the English four-letter property applies.
What Not to Store on the Same Plate
- BIP39 passphrase: Storing it with the seed removes the separation the passphrase is intended to provide.
- Hardware-wallet PIN: A device PIN is not normally required to recover from seed and can expose unnecessary information.
- Exact balance or owner identity: Avoid labels that tell a finder what the plate controls.
- Multisig descriptor only on one plate: Keep multiple verified descriptor or wallet-policy copies separately from the signer seeds.
Engraving Compared With Other Metal Backup Methods
| Method | Setup characteristics | Primary handling risk |
|---|---|---|
| Electric engraving | Writes full words quietly without impact tools or loose characters | Marks must be deep, legible, and checked for spelling |
| Letter stamping | Creates impact marks with a hammer and individual punches | Misalignment, incomplete strikes, noise, and plate movement |
| Tile or capsule systems | Assembles characters into an enclosure without writing words | Small-part order, assembly errors, and component loss |
Recovery Test Checklist
- Confirm the wallet expects the same recovery standard and word count.
- Verify all words in the correct numbered order.
- Enter the phrase only into a trusted offline signing device.
- Confirm the expected wallet fingerprint or a previously verified receiving address.
- If a passphrase is used, test it separately and document how heirs can recover it.
- Never type the phrase into a website, support chat, email, or password manager.
