Description

The Foundation Passport Prime is a Bitcoin hardware wallet that also replaces your authenticator app, hardware security key, and encrypted drive. Foundation Devices calls it Human Authority Hardware: one open-source device for Bitcoin self-custody, 2FA codes, FIDO security keys, and 50GB of hardware-encrypted file storage.

It runs KeyOS, Foundation’s open-source operating system built on a Rust microkernel. Every app runs in its own sandbox with its own hardened child key, so no app ever touches your master key. The hardware and software are fully open source, third-party audited by Keylabs, and every unit is assembled, provisioned, and quality checked at Foundation’s ITAR facility in New Hampshire, USA.

One Device, Four Security Tools

• Bitcoin wallet: Multisig cosigning, taproot send and receive, PSBT support, SeedQR import and export, passphrases, message signing, address explorer, and testnet support. Pairs with Envoy for single-sig or Sparrow, Nunchuk, Specter, Electrum, and BlueWallet for multisig.

Security Architecture Without Compromise

Your master seed is never stored in plain form on the device. It is split between the Microchip SAMA5D2 security processor and a dedicated 608C secure element, then XORed with a hash of your PIN or password. Even an attacker with full access to both chips would face a brute-force problem, not a payout.

Active anti-tamper protection factory resets the device the instant it detects an attempt to remove the screen or tamper with the PCB or chassis, and 10 failed PIN attempts trigger an automatic erase. A supply chain security check at onboarding verifies your firmware was never touched in transit.

QuantumLink, Foundation’s Bluetooth protocol, runs on a physically separate chip and layers CRYSTALS-Kyber post-quantum key exchange with ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption. The pairing key is exchanged by QR code, so the Bluetooth chip itself never sees it. Prefer no radios? Bluetooth and NFC can be disabled in the control center, and you can sign transactions air-gapped by QR code with the built-in camera. There is no WiFi on the device, period.

Backups use a 2-of-3 Shamir split of your master key across three included NFC Keycards (with Faraday sleeves), or Foundation’s encrypted Magic Backups via Envoy. Traditional BIP39 seed words remain accessible in settings for compatibility with any standard wallet.
